United Electric Supply
05  /  What has to change behind the counter

Ownership is not a message problem. It is a capital allocation problem.

The page can be rewritten in an afternoon. The claim only survives contact with a buyer if the six things below are decided. Each is a board-level decision with a number attached, not a marketing task.

Who actually owns the ownership

“It is, on paper, an employee owned company, but they care nothing for anything but keeping the stock price high for the original employee/owners who hold the lions share of stock. The shares earned by newer…”

Indeed · Sales Manager, Upper Darby PA · 9 Nov 2023

This is the most dangerous line in the file because it attacks the asset directly. If share allocation is weighted to tenure, then the counter and warehouse staff a customer actually meets — the shortest-tenured, highest-turnover roles in the company — are the least owning people in an employee-owned business. The promise would be structurally inverted at exactly the point of contact it depends on.

The decision

Publish the vesting schedule. Model front-loading allocation toward customer-facing roles. Cost: dilution of long-tenured holders, who are also the people who vote.

The culture stops at the state line

“Terrible workplace environment… Company in Delaware seems great and full of charisma but the team in Rochester is not at all.”

Indeed · 3 Jun 2026

Rochester is Kovalsky-Carr, merged January 2024. Its president told his own people at the time: “Being part of United Electric and their ESOP will support our long-term goal to invest in our associates.” Two and a half years later an associate there is describing the opposite. Meanwhile the CEO’s stated model is a multi-regional distributor supporting independent operating brands — and independence is precisely what stops a single ownership culture from crossing over.

The decision

Pick one. Either acquired branches integrate into the ownership culture on a published timetable, or the company stops presenting itself as one thing. Both are defensible. Holding both is not.

A personality test gates internal movement

“We all take an OAD personality assessment before being hired or changing jobs within the company… Sometimes it seems like people aren’t even considered for a role in a different department if their OAD says they’re not a good fit.”

Glassdoor, 5.0 · New Castle DE · current employee 5+ years · 15 May 2023

Note the rating. This is a five-star review — someone who loves the place, describing the one thing that contradicts it. An owner who cannot move inside the company they own is a shareholder, not an owner.

The decision

Remove personality screening from internal transfers. Keep it for external hiring if it earns its keep. Cost: near zero. This is the cheapest item on the page.

04  ·  Resource allocation

The trade nobody has priced

“pay can be a little low, which they cite is, in part at least, due to their status an ESOP company”

Indeed · 25 Feb 2026

“I do not think they pay their employees as much as the rest of industry. They are in desperate need of real leadership from top to bottom.”

Indeed · Outside Sales Rep, Jessup MD · 10 Jan 2022

Below-market pay funded by stock is a legitimate trade and a real refusal — money genuinely goes somewhere else. It only works if the stock is worth more than the gap to a person who leaves at year three. Nobody appears to have run that number and shown it to them.

The decision

Model total compensation including share value at years three, five and ten for a counter role. If it beats market, publish it — internally and externally. If it does not, pay to market and stop citing the ESOP as the reason.

Branch managers are the whole variance

Glassdoor, Wilmington filter: 4.1, with 100% CEO approval. Glassdoor, Newark filter: 1.0. Same company, same ESOP, same year.

“We would actually agree with you about the vibe in Jessup. We recently brought in new management for the branch and morale has really improved. We don’t always get it right but when we don’t, we try to fix it quickly.”

United Electric Supply, replying on Indeed · 28 Mar 2022

That reply is the best thing this company has ever published. It admits a branch failure by name, states the intervention, and claims a result — in public, unprompted. It also proves the fix works. The problem is that it reads as an exception rather than a standing process.

The decision

Make branch-level sentiment a monitored operating metric with a defined trigger, and act on it the way Jessup was acted on. Cost: a manager replacement budget and the will to use it.

The number that measures the promise

The entire customer position rests on one thing: the person at the counter is still there next year. Nothing in the public record suggests counter tenure is measured, reported, or owned by anyone. Meanwhile the record carries “short staffed, poorly structured workload balance,” equipment that “breaks down frequently,” and two separate accounts of people hired into one role and put into another.

A company that sells continuity of people and does not measure continuity of people is running its position on luck.

The decision

Adopt counter-staff tenure by branch as a reported operating metric alongside sales and margin. It is the leading indicator for every customer review in this document.

Outside the scope of this work

One Glassdoor review from Newark DE alleges racial favouritism in promotion. The company posted a public response referencing feedback programmes, diversity initiatives and internal promotion. It is recorded here because it exists in the same evidence base, it is the sole review under that location filter, and it is the kind of thing that surfaces in diligence. It belongs to counsel and to HR, not to a positioning engagement, and no recommendation is offered on it.
